The benefits of a glass porch

There are numerous benefits of a glass porch in your home.  Frameless glass porches provide cleaner sightlines, a more contemporary appearance and more functionality than pvcu, aluminium or timber porches. They also stand the test of time.  In this article, we tell you everything you need to know about the benefits of a glass porch and how they differ to traditional framed porches and canopies.

frameless glass porch

Comparing a glass porch to other products.

First of all, the construction of an all-glass or frameless porch differs from traditional framed models. A upvc, aluminium or wood porch relies on the frame for its strength.  A glass construction uses laminated or toughened glass fixed to minimal fittings and the smallest possible frame, depending on the design.

Then comes the design of the porch door.  With other framed porches, they rely on visible hinges just like a regular external door in your home.  The downside of this is that the door only opens one way.  A frameless glass porch usually has the door ‘hinge’ set into the floor.  Not only does this look neater, but it also does away with visible hinges.  Another benefit is you get to choose if your door opens in and out, not in or out.

A frameless product uses modern metal components called ‘patch fittings’ that allow your door to open and lock.  These patch fittings also secure the various elements of the glass porch together.  As a result, you get to choose a flat porch, square box design or one with side panels or a glass panel above.

Options available with frameless glass porches.

One of the best things about a frameless porch is how you can personalise it just for you and your particular house style of house. Practical, stylish, bespoke and modern.

We can also shape the glass to match curved or shaped brickwork. This process is quicker and easier than PVCu or aluminium frames.  While it is entirely possible to curve these, they often have restricted sizes and how tight a radius is. Glass is infinitely more flexible in cutting and shaping.  You also get other options with a frameless porch.

  • A porch provides an extra barrier of security for the front of your home.
  • Only a glass porch gives you a proper flat floor with no threshold.
  • Glass porches let you create an open or fully enclosed lobby.
  • Optional metal frames in satin or polished finishes add an attractive border.
  • Available with full frameless single or double doors with a great choice of door handles and accessories.
  • Provide extra convenience with hinged or pivoting glass doors even coming with a self-closing device hidden in the floor.
  • Enhanced security such as additional door locks or the installation of after-market alarm sensors.
  • A full range of glass options such as sandblasted, decorative, obscure, solar control or laminated.

The benefits of having a glass porch.

By far the best feature of a new glass porch is the all-glass appearance.  They usually come single glazed, and their design is to provide a new enclosed space.  However, they also make a great feature of your existing front door.

You may have a period door in your home such as a traditional timber door, a Crittall® door or a designer front door.  Our glass porches let you retain the visual appeal of your front door without obscuring it with upvc, aluminium or wood frames and glass in front of it.

As well as this, a porch offers tangible benefits like improved security, a more organised entranceway and weather protection while you open your door.

Finally you can fit our porch system inside the home to divide your hallway into separate spaces.  Or use our frameless doors and screens as a room divider with single or double doors.

All in all a very good experience with FGC

Thanks you for everything FGC did on this project for us.  We found you from an on-line search which doesn’t always identify helpful or committed suppliers, especially where the requirement is small or simple as this one was..  FGC were both helpful and committed.  Thank you especially for progressing things much quicker that the weeks

I am very happy with the installed doors. The fitters did an excellent job. They arrived on time, were polite and helpful, and went through all of the relevant information with myself and my wife.
They also cleaned the windows at the end of the installation.
